Renfrewshire Young Carers

Providing for People in Paisley supported a visit to Edinburgh Dungeons on Friday, 10 July 2026. The group of thirty travelled from Paisley Gilmour Street to Edinburgh via a direct train from Glasgow Central.
This interactive experience gave the attendees an introduction to Edinburgh’s history through several themed performances:
- The Courtroom: They took part in a simulated historical trial and were found guilty despite claiming innocence!
- Witchcraft: Historical witchcraft accusations were depicted in a rotating room with visual effects.
- Sawney Bean: Actors delivered the story through unexpected, immersive performances in a dark setting.
- Burke and Hare: The group watched a theatrical autopsy scene based on the case and engaged with its darker historical themes.
Young Carer Feedback
The young carers were enthusiastic about the trip and particularly enjoyed the interactive and frightening elements of the Dungeons and commented:
“I liked the Sawney Bean bit because it made us all scream.”
“I liked going with all my friends and doing something different.”
“The best part was when everyone screamed at the same time.”
Overall, the trip offered the young carers a fun, shared experience connecting with peers, and actively taking a break from their caring responsibilities.
Buffet lunch
The planned unlimited buffet lunch at Pizza Hut in Edinburgh after the Dungeon visit could not go ahead because the restaurant had closed. Following consultation with the Young Carers Co-design Group, the meal was rescheduled and held at Pizza Hut Braehead on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, with 27 attendees.
A parent’s feedback highlighted the importance of providing ordinary childhood experiences and respite opportunities for young carers. Their 8-year-old already understands her caregiving responsibilities and recognises how her family’s circumstances may limit everyday activities.
The Pizza Hut outing provided an opportunity to experience something that many children may take for granted - going out for a meal, spending time with her older sibling and enjoying time with other young carers.
